IP History
"Intellectual Property" is a legal term that refers to the exclusive
rights that owners maintain to their discoveries, inventions, artistic
compositions, and other creations. If properly documented, this
"bundle" of ownership rights is protected for legally defined periods
of time through the use of grants of protection such as patents,
trademarks, and copyrights that are issued by governmental bodies
throughout the world.
Rights holders frequently segment their rights and sell partial
rights to different licensees for different purposes, thus maximizing
their potential. Rights can also be limited in their usage to specific
geographic regions or specific products and services, as well as
for defined preiods of time.
Patent law protects inventions and discoveries such as new products and processes.
Copyright law protects expressive aspects of recorded information including written works, music, audiovisual works, and computer programs.
Trademark law protects brand names and other symbols that
indicate the source of goods and services.
The law of licensing enables owners of protected rights to share
them with others on a mutually agreed upon basis, most often in
some form of License Agreement.
Licensing occurs in a broad range of fields, from technology transfer
to the application of cartoon characters on childern's clothing.
IP*Network, through our RightsAuctioneer system,
is the marketplace which brings together rights holders and potential
licensees who want to pay them to use their rights.
